Before cars breezed along paved streets, wagons drawn by horses and mules dominated mid-19th Century roads. A good representation of life during this time is incomplete without a glimpse of period transportation. CWHI is committed to striving towards better authenticity in this regard and as such recently purchased a wagon!
This wagon, smaller in size, represents what could easily be seen being driven by farmers, traveling sutlers, photographers, and more. Though not a larger and heavier supply wagon as would be seen following army units, it has the potential to add to military settings as images show similar wagons used by the Signal Corps and Hospital Corps. No doubt there were desperate moments on campaign when anything on wheels was better than nothing at all as far as transporting equipment, supplies, or wounded are concerned.
It boasts original hardware and has been rebuilt by its previous owner, making it immediately functional. However, we recognize that there is some “defarbing” work to be done (specifically replacing the metal tube bows and getting a properly made cover) before this wagon is 100% ready to authentically take to the field at events.
If you would like to pitch in on the cost of this wagon project and support what CWHI is up to, please consider making a donation! We’ve got the cost covered, but would certainly appreciate the help if you so choose!
